PPPM Bahasa Inggeris Form 1

PANDUAN PERKEMBANGAN PEMBELAJARAN MURID BAHASA INGGERIS TINGKATAN 1 (PPPM Bahasa Inggeris Form 1)


Bands

Level of proficiency is indicated by what is called as 'Band'. There are a total of 6 bands (Band 1 to Band 6). Band 1 is the lowest proficiency level or basic skills (beginner)  and Band 6 is the highest proficiency level which indicates some advance skills.


The 'DESKRIPTOR' or detail indicators for each bands :

Band 1 :  Know fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Ask simple questions politely to obtain information and respond to questions appropriately.
Listen to and discriminate homophones.

Reading Skills
Read aloud familiar texts with appropriate pronunciation and intonation.

Writing Skills
Write a few simple sentences but lack accuracy.



Band 2 :  Understand meaning of words, phrase and sentence level.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Introduce oneself briefly using suggested sentence patterns.
Listen to and discriminate homographs

Reading Skills
Read aloud familiar texts with good pronunciation and intonation, obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately, find meanings of unfamiliar words from a variety of sources (eg: dictionary, thesaurus)

Writing Skills
Express some ideas in simple sentences, using basic vocabulary with very minimal use of writing conventions.



Band 3 :  Use knowledge acquired through  listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Talk about self, family and friends correctly and display understanding when others talk about themselves.
Listen and respond to texts and recall main ideas.

Reading Skills
Read aloud a variety of texts genres with good pronunciation and intonation, obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately, using contextual clues adequately, find meanings of unfamiliar words from a variety of sources (eg: dictionary, thesaurus)

Writing Skills
Write a simple text expressing one's opinion using simple sentence patterns with sufficient use of writing conventions and vocabulary.


 

Band 4 :  Apply knowledge acquired in a variety of  situations using some appropriate language conventions.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Discuss an unfamiliar topic with some prompts using language functions appropriately.
Listen and respond to a wide range of texts by recognizing messages in the text.

Reading Skills
Read a variety of texts to obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately, sufficiently find meanings of unfamiliar words from a variety of sources and using contextual clues, correctly identifying main ideas, supporting details, and cause and effect relationships.

Writing Skills
Write a text expressing one's opinion with a fair amount of sentence patterns,  writing conventions, vocabulary and creativity.


Band 5 :  Demonstrate the ability to use language in a variety of situations using largely appropriate language conventions.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Exchange ideas and give opinions on topics of interests with less prompts using correct language conventions in a face-to-face situation.
Listen and respond to a wide range of texts in terms of their messages.

Reading Skills
Read a variety of texts to obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately, find meanings of unfamiliar words from a variety of sources and using contextual clues competently, correctly identify main ideas, supporting details, and cause and effect relationships, and accurately summarise texts.

Writing Skills
Produce a good piece of writing expressing one's opinions with some creativity, using a wide range of sentence patterns, writing conventions and vocabulary.

 
Band 6 :  Appreciate literary works and present ideas critically in an exemplary manner.

Listening & Speaking Skills
Give opinions on topics of interests in public with confidence. Participate confidently in conversations and discussions.
Listen to and process information from short text effectively

Reading Skills
Read a variety of texts to obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately, find meanings of unfamiliar words confidently from a variety of sources and using contextual clues, correctly identify main ideas, supporting details, and cause and effect relationships, and effectively summarise texts, process information at a higher order, predict outcomes and draw conclusions appropriately.

Writing Skills
Produce a creative and interesting piece of writing expressing one's opinions and thoughts creatively using a good variety of sentence patterns, writing conventions and an excellent range of vocabulary.

ABOUT THE SYLLABUS 


Aims of English Syllabus : The English Syllabus aims to extend learners' English language proficiency in order to meet their needs for English in everyday life, for knowledge acquisition, and for future workplace needs.

Objectives of the syllabus : By the end of form 1, learners should be able to:

(1)
  • Make friends and talk about themselves
  • recount experiences and also
  • enquire (ask questions  to get information)  about the person(s) they are talking to.

(2)
  • Make enquiries about services 
  • make a booking/appointment and
  • fill in an application form.

(3)
  • Socialise with friends (communicate) and in groups
  • make plans and and arrangements for joint activities

(4)
  • obtain information (get information) from various text-types (variety of written materials) such as articles and reports,
  • and present the information briefly to others orally and in writing

(5)
  • Read and enjoy poems and short stories

(6)
  • Have a positive outlook and act appropriately in social situations

(7)
  • Show an awareness
  • and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation
